『卒婚』とは、終えるという意味の「卒」と「結婚」を掛け合わせた造語。婚姻関係にある夫婦が、離婚はしないまま、お互いの生活を干渉せずにそれぞれの人生を自由に生きるという「新しい夫婦のかたち」をさす言葉。

2004年に発表された杉山由美子氏の著書「卒婚のススメ」で使われた言葉で、それ以降、世間でも広く使われるようになった。

“sotu kon” is a coined word that combines “sotu(=graduation)” and “kekkon(=marriage)” .

It is a term that refers to a new type of married couple in which couples live their lives freely without interfering with each other’s lives without divorcing.

A term used in Yumiko Sugiyama’s book “sotukon no susume(=Recommendations for Graduation marriage)” published in 2004, and has  become widely used in general.
