同じく若い世代を表す言葉に、「肉食男子」「肉食女子」などがある。こちらは草食とは反対に、恋愛や異性に対して積極的な人をさす。

コラムニストの深澤真紀氏が2006年に命名、2009年には新語・流行語大賞トップ10に選出された。

Meaning / Origin

The term “Sousyoku dansi (=herbivorous boys)” refers to a young man who is not active in love and the opposite sex. Also called a “Sousyoku kei dansi”.

Similarly, words that represent the younger generation include “Nikusyoku dansi(=carnivorous boys)” and “Nikusyoku jyosi(=carnivorous girls)”. As opposed to “Sousyoku(=herbivorous), this refers to people who are active in love and the opposite sex.

The term was named by columnist Maki Fukasawa in 2006. In 2009, it was selected as one of the top 10 New and Buzzword Award.
