『アオハル』は、「青春（せいしゅん）」を訓読みで読んだもの。意味は「青春」と同じ。

2010年創刊の青年漫画雑誌「アオハル」、2011年に連載がスタートした少女漫画「アオハライド」など、以前から「アオハル」という表現は使用されていたが、認知度はそこまで高くなかった。

言葉が広まるきっかけになったのは、2017年に放映された日清カップヌードルのCM『HUNGRY DAYS』。CM中に挿入される「アオハルかよ。」というフレーズが注目され、一気に世間に広まった。
