“Inbound” is derived from the English word “inbound”, which means “coming in, arriving, and heading to home country.”  In the Japanese tourism industry, it means “a trip to Japan by a foreigner” and “a foreign tourist visiting Japan”.

In 2003, then Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi started a campaign to promote inbound tourism with the goal of “10 million foreign tourists visiting Japan.” In 2013, the number exceeded 10 million, and in 2015, it increased by 47% from the previous year to about 20 million, and “inbound” exceeded “outband (Japanese foreign travel)”. Since then, the word “inbound” has often been used in media such as television, and was selected as “New Word of the Year 2015”.
