インターネットの掲示板で使用されていた「笑い」を意味する「笑（わら・wara）」が「w」へと変化し、さらに「w」の見た目が草が生えている様子に似ていることから、「笑い」＝「草」と表現されるようになった。

「草生える（笑える）」「大草原（大笑い）」といったフレーズでも使われる。
